Silicon Photonics Design Engineer

Own the layout and simulation of passive and active photonic building blocks — waveguides, couplers, ring resonators and modulators — on a 300mm silicon photonics platform. You will work script-first, in a layout-as-code flow, alongside the process and test teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and simulate passive photonic components: waveguides, directional couplers, MMI splitters, ring resonators and grating couplers.
  • Translate a physical specification (loss budget, bandwidth, footprint, FSR) into a parameterised cell library.
  • Run FDTD and eigenmode sweeps to fix geometry before tape-out, and document the trade-offs you took.
  • Build and maintain the test structures that let us separate design error from process variation.
  • Work with the layout and verification engineer through DRC/LVS clean-up to a signed-off GDSII.

WHAT WE NEED TO SEE

  • Degree in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering or nanotech — or equivalent demonstrated work.
  • Working knowledge of guided-wave optics and at least one electromagnetic solver.
  • Ability to script your own design flow rather than clicking through a GUI.
  • Comfort reading a process design kit and reasoning about what it does not let you build.

ADVANTAGEOUS

  • Tape-out experience, even a shared multi-project wafer run.
  • Familiarity with modulator physics and travelling-wave electrode design.
  • Bench experience measuring insertion loss and spectrum.
